Artisanal Farming, Slow Food & Family

Sunbird Farms pastured-poultry and eggs are the best!

Pastured eggs, Marans

Ok, we might be a little partial, but the facts are that our pastured-poultry and eggs really are better for your family.  More than ever, doctors are recommending we eat high-quality proteins and whole foods.  Recently, MD’s have been recommending eggs as an immunity-boosting food, due to their Vitamin A content.  Pastured-eggs like those from Sunbird Farms have 2/3’s more Vitamin A than conventional eggs.  But that’s just the beginning…

Pastured Poultry & Eggs

In July of 2015, we had the pleasure of joining a number of other pasture-based farmers in a nutrient testing project sponsored by Mother Earth News.  We submitted samples of our premium pastured eggs and chicken thighs to ANRESCO in San Francisco, an independent testing lab.  The test looked specifically at an analysis of fatty acids, specifically looking at Omega-6s and Omega-3s.  In short, when you buy Sunbird Farms pastured eggs and poultry, not only are you supporting the preservation of heritage breeds; more sustainable, bio-diverse farming; and better tasting food; but you can be sure that what your eating is proven healthier for you and your family.

Omega Fatty Acids

The most important aspect of Omega-6s and Omega-3s is not just that they are present in our food in sufficient quantities, but that their ratio is in a healthy range; the lower the ratio the better.  Conventional eggs average a ratio of about 15:1, Omega-6s to Omega-3s.  Sunbird Farms pastured eggs have a ratio of about 6:1, having almost 6x more Omega-3s than conventional eggs.  Our pastured-poultry has a ratio of 7:1, which is more than twice as healthy as conventional poultry.

Even Better Now

Since that time, we’ve actually adjusted our organic feed to reduce the corn we feed our chickens.  This has the benefit of lowering the Omega-6 content, which is even more preferable than raising the Omega-3 content.  Today, our ratios are even lower than they were in 2015!

If you’re interested in feeding your family the very best, you can regularly find our eggs at Sage Roots in Three Rivers or you can also buy directly from us, including our poultry, by emailing the farm at: orders@sunbirdfarms.com
