Winter at Sunbird Farms
It’s been a lovely winter here at Sunbird Farms, and we’ve even been enjoying some much-needed rain. One of our favorite times of the year, the peacefulness of winter is a time for reflection and restoration. Quiet walks with warm coffee give us a chance to enjoy a moment of solitude. The green shoots let us know that before long, the growing season will be upon us, but for now the trees slumber and the earth rejuvenates. One breed we are keeping our eye on over these short days in the Barbezieux. These cockerels are foraging among the leaves and green shoots in our orchard. Although we lost a few to the “revolution” as Eduardo Sousa says, we still have plenty to work with this spring (the “revolution” being free-range, exposure to the elements and predators, as opposed to the industrial, quarantined, indoor environment). A magnificent breed, the Barbezieux is tall, strong and even-tempered. Productive rangers, what they lack in notoriety they more than make up for in performance. Barbezieux are a quiet but towering presence in the orchard.
We are looking forward to evaluating them soon, but wanted to share a few photos with you. We love the way the red and white and black contrast against the brown and the green. A hopeful scene for a hopeful time. May you all have a happy new year!
