Barbezieux and walnuts
Our Barbezieux have quickly learned how to benefit from a system. Walnuts, left over from the harvest, can be an amazing source of nutrients (see here). Unfortunately for our chickens, they are not easily opened. Enter our chocolate lab…
Move over truffle hogs… meet the truffle “walnut dog”
Our labs have developed an amazing skill for determining the quality of walnuts still in their shell. Like the amazing truffle hog, our dogs will only select walnuts that are still fresh and whole and free of decay. Throw them a rotten walnut; one sniff and they move on, “no thank you.” But when their incredible nose leads them to a good one, all you hear is, “crunch, crunch, crunch.”
The Barbezieux system
Let no one claim that Barbezieux have “bird brains;” they have mastered a sort of livestock management (managing our labs) that demonstrates a considered approach to eating. They have discovered that if they follow our labs around the orchard, and wait for the “crunchy” signal, they can swoop in and eat the pieces of walnuts left by the dogs. No need to crack a shell, no risk that the walnut meat will be rotten. Simply follow that fat brown dog around the orchard and you will be rewarded with delectable walnuts. Don’t believe me…watch:
