American Bresse juvenile comparison
If these two were in that famous story by Lewis Carroll, you’d assume the American Bresse juvenile on the right had eaten from the side of the mushroom that “makes you grow taller.”
Instead, it’s just hundreds of years of effort by French Farmers that have resulted in this almost ridiculous comparison. Believe it or not, these juveniles are the same age, hatched on the same day. American Bresse juvenile on the right, American heritage juvenile on the left.
Rarely do we run side-by-side comparisons, but this year we’ve done two. Ixworth with American Bresse and American heritage with American Bresse. This particular trial is the starkest. In fact, in our Ixworth v. American Bresse trial, we’re not sure who’s winning, but more on that later (it’s close).
It’s been almost 8 weeks, and the two in this picture have evened out a bit, but there’s clearly still a significant difference. We will continue this project until we get to the table, and let you know how things turn out.
Thriving on the farm
What continues to amaze us here at Sunbird Farms, is how well the American Bresse thrives on the range. If you looked at the comparison above, you might think the big bird is going to be lazy, sitting around like some over-developed Cornish-X, too big to move, to heavy to thrive. Instead, these juveniles are active and love to forage.
We’re about 4 months into our “re-do” on the American Bresse, and we’re hoping this new blood will deliver on the promises we’ve seen glimpses of in the past. A bird when at its best, is at the pinnacle of pastured-poultry. So far, so good… oh yeah, did we mention the Ixworth?…stay tuned.
